Abstract
This article reviews different aspects of the research on problem solving. Based on a perspective from mathematics education, the presentation focuses on relevant approaches and results from cognitive theory. Moreover, some programs to foster individual mathematical problem solving competence are presented and the topic of problem solving is discussed in a mathematical and non mathematical context.
