Unbekanntes Europa? Eine vergleichende Analyse zu Verteilung und Determinanten von Kenntnissen über die Europäische Union

Zusammenfassung

Das Selbstverständnis der Europäischen Union hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten deutlich verändert. Während die EU früher ein vornehmlich von politischen Eliten betriebenes Projekt war, versteht sie sich heute als „Herrschaftsverband mit demokratischem Legitimitätsanspruch“ (Trüdinger 2008, S. 215). Damit einhergehend hat sich auch die Rolle verändert, die die EU ihren Bürgern zuerkennt. Während den Bürgern zuvor eher die Position von Zuschauern im europäischen Einigungsprozess zugewiesen wurde, rücken sie nun zunehmend in den Mittelpunkt des politischen Prozesses. Sichtbarstes Zeichen dieses Paradigmenwechsels war die Einführung der Direktwahl des Europäischen Parlaments, die im Jahr 1979 erstmals durchgeführt wurde.
