Molecular Systematics: 1991–1993

Abstract

The impact of the DNA revolution on plant systematics has increased dramatically during the last few years. These effects are noticeable in obvious ways such as the amount of grant funding, published papers, and presented talks and posters dealing with macromolecules. A quick survey of six important and broadly encompassing journals with systematic coverage, at least in part (Taxon, American Journal of Botany, Systematic Botany, Canadian Journal of Botany, Nordic Journal of Botany, and Australian Journal of Botany), reveals more than a 100% increase in molecular studies published during the last five years relative to the previous five. More subtly, these effects are seen in (1) the increasing number of studies that attempt (correctly) to fully integrate molecular results with those from more traditional studies (i.e., “morphological” broadly defined), (2) the collaboration of different “traditional” and “molecular” research programs working on the same set of systematic problems, and (3) the training in molecular systematic methods at all professional levels. Not surprising, then, is the increase in the number of taxonomic revisions based in part on molecular data (see below).
