Abstract
Negatively buoyant turbulent jets/plumes have been examined in the laboratory, including the effects of cross-flow and injection angle. A water tow tank was used for the experiments, where the jet nozzle was towed through quiescent fluid at constant velocity. Photographic records of the jet/plume structure were used to measure the jet/plume dimensions. The non-dimensionalized length scales were found to correlate with the jet and cross-flow Froude numbers over a wide range of the experimental parameters. Three flow regimes have been identified, which depend on the cross-flow Froude number F○: F○≪1, negligible cross-flow, 0<F○<1,weak cross-flow, F○>1, strong cross-flow, where Fo = Uo/(g′ℓc)1/2, Uo is the cross-flow velocity, g′ is the reduced gravity and ℓc is a characteristic length scale for the nozzle (i.e. the radius for a round jet).
