Zusammenfassung
Corporate Purpose kursiert als Buzzword in der Managementpraxis, obwohl es kein einheitliches Begriffsverständnis eines Corporate Purpose gibt. Zwar leisten die Kienbaum Studie (2020) sowie weitere praxis-wissenschaftliche Publikationen erste Beiträge zum besseren Verständnis des Konstrukts, dennoch existiert bislang keine theoretische Grundlage zu dem Thema.
Der folgende Beitrag unternimmt einen ersten Versuch, das Konzept des Corporate Purpose in die bestehende Forschungsliteratur einzugliedern und stellt Corporate Purpose als eine Sonderform organisationaler Legitimität dar. Im Zuge dieser Eingliederung wird die aktuelle Literatur zu Corporate Purpose sowie der Forschungstand zu organisationaler Legitimität vorgestellt. Infolgedessen werden die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der beiden Konstrukte diskutiert und ein Verständnis von Corporate Purpose als relativ konkreter Legitimitätsanspruch moderner Organisationen eingeführt.

In der Literatur werden die Begriffe Corporate Purpose und Purpose synonym verwendet und beziehen sich meist auf den Purpose der Organisation. Allerdings existiert auch Literatur, die einen persönlichen Purpose von Individuen adressiert (Craig und Snook 2014). In diesem Beitrag beziehen sich die Begriffe Corporate Purpose oder Purpose ausschließlich auf die Organisation.

Stakeholder umfassen in diesem Beitrag „die Individuen oder Gruppen, die durch ihre Handlungen die Organisation betreffen oder die von den Handlungen der Organisation betroffen sind“ (Voegtlin 2011). Wir unterscheiden in diesem Verständnis interne (zum Beispiel Mitarbeiter*innen, Eigentümer*innen/Inhaber*innen, Führungskräfte) und externe Stakeholder (zum Beispiel Kund*innen, Lieferant*innen, Gesellschaftsmitglieder).

Ähnlich wie bei den synonym verwendeten Begriffen Corporate Purpose und Purpose werden in der Literatur die Begriffe organisationale Legitimität (Suchman 1995) und Legitimität (Suddaby et al. 2017) synonym verwendet. Beide Begriffe beziehen sich auf die Legitimität von Organisationen. Wir übernehmen dieses Verständnis und beziehen uns mit den Begriffen organisationale Legitimität bzw. Legitimität auf die Legitimität einer oder mehrerer Organisationen.
