Zusammenfassung
Nachdem der Produktmanager mittels geeigneter Methoden die Entscheidung über ein Erfolg versprechendes Produktkonzept gefällt hat, steht er vor der Aufgabe die Markteinführung des Produkts zu planen und durchzuführen. Die Bedeutung dieser Phase wird anhand von Praxisbeispielen deutlich. Die Einführung der ersten Homevideo-Systeme in den 1970er Jahren führen Autoren immer wieder als exemplarisch für die Herausforderungen im Rahmen der Wahl einer adäquaten Markteinführungsstrategie an.
Das Video 2000-System wurde 1979 als Nachfolger des ursprünglichen Systems VCR von den Unternehmen Philips und Grundig auf den Markt gebracht. Es hatte einige Vorteile gegenüber dem VHS-System, wie zum Beispiel die Möglichkeit zur beidseitigen Verwendung der Bänder, konnte sich aber am Markt nicht gegen die VHS-Konkurrenz behaupten. Das zum Matsushita-Konzern gehörende Unternehmen JVC führte sein System (VHS) weltweit zeitgleich ein. Im Ergebnis hatte das VHS-System zur Zeit des Markteintritts der Konkurrenten Philips und Grundig bereits solch großen Marktanteil und ebenso hohe Markteintrittsbarrieren aufgebaut, dass es nicht mehr vom Markt zu verdrängen war. JVC setzte einen Quasi-Standard, indem VHS exklusiv über die meisten Videotheken vertrieben wurde. Die Ursache für die Sicherung dieses wichtigen Distributionskanals waren die wesentlich geringeren Lizenzgebühren die JVC verlangte. Das Ergebnis: Wenige Jahre nach der Einführung musste das Video 2000-System wieder vom Markt genommen werden. Im Jahr 1980 wurde das VHS-System zum anerkannten Standard.
