Abstract

“The obstetrician bids, and the uterus contracts” was the title of Chassar Moir’s Sandoz Foundation lecture given in 1964 (Moir, 1964). With this categorical statement he pointed to the great reliability of some drugs, and in particular of ergot, in causing the uterus to contract, thereby diminishing or preventing postpartum haemorrhage and reducing maternal mortality in childbirth.
