Abstract
Metal surface and interfacial phenomena are extensively involved in metallurgical processes, such as corrosion, wearing, intergranular fracture and cavity formation in creep. Even if these phenomena take place at local areas in a metal product, they may cause a fatal failure due to the connection and propagation of such damaged areas. Although these processes are considered to be sensitive to the concentration of impurities contained in metals and alloys, their roles in such surface and interfacial phenomena have not been understood well. This is because the purity of the base metals used has not been sufficiently controlled to investigate the effect of impurities on the properties thereof, and because the impurities enriched at the surface and interface have not been directly analyzed. Therefore, it becomes indispensable to characterize the intrinsic behavior of impurity and alloying elements in high-purity base metals and alloys, in order to obtain new ideas for the design and development of high-quality materials.
