Zusammenfassung
Motivation ist das beherrschende Thema in der Forschung zur Freiwilligenarbeit. Dieser Beitrag stellt mit der sog. Selbstbestimmungstheorie eine Motivationstheorie vor, die sich nicht nur mit der Quantität, sondern auch mit der Qualität von Motivation befasst. Handeln kann einerseits mit dem Erleben von Selbstbestimmung einhergehen, andererseits von Fremdbestimmung und Kontrolle gefärbt sein. Wenngleich einiges dafür spricht, dass Menschen bei ihrer Freiwilligentätigkeit häufiger als woanders selbstbestimmte Motivation erfahren, so stellt Selbstbestimmung in der Freiwilligenarbeit keine Selbstverständlichkeit dar. Empirische Befunde unterstreichen die Bedeutung selbstbestimmter Motivation für eine erfolgreiche Freiwilligenarbeit – aus Sicht sowohl der Freiwilligen als auch der Organisationen, die mit ihnen zusammenarbeiten. Es zeigt sich, dass verschiedene Beweggründe für Freiwilligenarbeit auf charakteristische Weise mit dem Erleben von Selbstbestimmung bzw. Kontrolle verbunden sind. Wie Organisationen Selbstbestimmung in der Freiwilligenarbeit fördern können, wird abschließend diskutiert.
