Aspirin as an antithrombotic agent

Abstract

In retrospect, it appears that the earliest glimmers that aspirin might have antithrombotic properties were inherent in anecdotal reports of gastrointestinal bleeding in some patients, such as arthritics, who were consuming large amounts of aspirin. These reports were followed by controlled studies in 1938 which showed gastric hermorrhage [1] or, in 1958, occult blood in the feces, after the ingestion of aspirin [2].
