Zusammenfassung
Erfolgreiche digitale Plattformen verfügen über eine große Marktmacht, die sie in die Lage versetzt, ganze Märkte umzuwandeln. So ist es mittlerweile nicht verwunderlich, dass in New York mehr Uber-Fahrer als Taxi-Fahrer auf den Straßen sind und das Angebot von Airbnb-Unterkünften das Angebot von Hotels vielerorts übersteigt. Dabei gelten diese Plattformunternehmen noch als sehr junge und dynamische Unternehmen, die mit erstaunlichen Wachstumsraten die Konkurrenz staunen lassen. Doch ist nicht alles Gold, was glänzt. Auch digitale Plattformen haben mit Herausforderungen zu kämpfen, die eine Marktetablierung zunehmend erschweren. In der Forschungslandschaft werden diese ‚dunklen‘ Seiten jedoch nur unzureichend betrachtet, weshalb sich dieser Beitrag zum Ziel setzt, Transparenz zu schaffen. Dazu werden verschiedene Kategorialmodelle miteinander verglichen, die jeweils andersartige unternehmensinterne Herausforderungen beim Unternehmenswachstum repräsentieren. Überschneidungen in diesen Kategorialmodellen werden zu sogenannten Tipping Points zusammengefasst. Basierend auf dem Plattform-Entwicklungsportfolio (Gabriel, L. (2020). Digitale Plattformen: Grundlagen und Erscheinungsformen. In R. Weiber (Hrsg.), Forschungsbericht zum Marketing des Lehrstuhls für Marketing an der Universität Trier, Nr. 17. Eigenverlag.) wird herausgearbeitet, dass insbesondere wachstumsstarke Plattformen mit großen internen Herausforderungen zu kämpfen haben. Als Abschluss des Beitrags wird ein Ausblick auf aktuell intensiv in der Forschung diskutierte externe Herausforderungen gegeben.

Der Nachteil resultiert daraus, dass der Aufwand, der aus dem Anschluss an ein Netzwerk resultiert, den Nutzen daraus übersteigt. Dieser sogenannte Adoptionsnachteil resultiert beim Kritische Masse-Problem aus unzureichend vielen Interaktionsmöglichkeiten zwischen Nutzern während der Gründungsphase eines Systemgutes, bevor die Kritische Masse überwunden wurde. Erst danach wandelt sich der Adoptionsnachteil in einen Adoptionsvorteil und die anfängliche Instabilitätsphase wird überwunden.

Der Begriff Tipping Points ist nicht mit dem Kritische-Masse-Bereich zu verwechseln, bei dem die Durchsetzungsfähigkeit eines Kritische-Masse-Systems noch unklar ist. Während im Modell der Kritischen Masse nach Rogers (1962) nur von einem Zeitpunkt mit bestehender Unsicherheit über den zukünftigen Entwicklungsverlauf ausgegangen wird, grenzen sich Tipping Points nach Phelps et al. (2007) dahingehend ab, dass in einer zeitlichen Abfolge verschiedene Tipping Points erreicht werden, an denen für das Unternehmen zentrale Fragestellungen zu beantworten sind.

Es gibt eine Vielzahl verschiedener Ansätze, inwiefern das Umfeld eines Unternehmens analysiert werden kann. Zu nennen sind hier die Ansätze der STEP-Analyse nach Fahey und Narayanan (1986), das Fünf-Kräfte-Modell nach Porter (1980), die Balanced Scorecard nach Kaplan und Norton (1992) oder die SWOT-Analyse, welche bei Abell und Hammond (1979) nachzulesen ist.
