Abstract
Max Dehn thought that studying the history of mathematics offered an opportunity for cultural enrichment, particularly when undertaken with like-minded individuals. Some of those who attended his Frankfurt seminar were profoundly affected by the experience. By drawing on Dehn’s own words and the testimonies of C.L. Siegel and André Weil, we gain a sense of how Dehn led these discussions and why they mattered. His student, Adolf Prag, brought the spirit of Dehn’s seminar to England and a small part of it back to Germany again.
