The Challenge of Demographic Change
A recent report from the World Health Organization on world population prospects forecasted an unprecedented demographic shift in human history: the number of people aged 65 or older will outnumber children under the age of 5 before 2020. In most developed countries, the average life expectancy at birth has increased from about 45 years in the 1800s to above 75 years in the twentieth century. This remarkable 30-year gain in physical health is, however, not necessarily accompanied by cognitive fitness and mental well-being into old age.
