Abstract
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the use of technology in Chinese language teaching and learning in the past 120 years, tracing its history back to 1900 when phonology technology was first used to teach Chinese remotely. It presents the evolution of the use of technology in a chronological order: the past century (1900–1949, 1950–1999), the present century (2000–2009, 2010–2019, 2020). Technologies developed and used in Chinese language teaching during each of the time periods are reviewed together with a summary of their applications in Chinese language teaching practice and research. Given the huge variety of technologies available today, the chapter suggests two ways of categorizing instructional technologies, shares major frameworks for discussing technologies, and provides several guidelines for applying technologies in Chinese language teaching and learning.
