Abstract
In the quest for creating ethical awareness and sensitivity about workplace bullying and harassment, the chapter starts with discussing the prevalence of bullying in organizations. There is a lack of a consistent definition, and the definitions that exist vary internationally and in different occupations and professions and are presented. Then the case is made as to why workplace bullying and harassment should be managed. First, a deep dive is taken into the ethical approaches to the workplace, that is, deontological, teleological, virtue ethics, nonmaleficence, benevolence, justice and ethical leadership. Second, a discussion of the physical, emotional and safety costs involved in workplace bullying is presented, followed by a discussion of how bullying might be alleviated through legal and third-party mechanisms. These include legislation, employment practices liability insurance, collective bargaining, consultants, professional associations, employee assistance programmes and hotlines. The tables in the chapter state the various definitions of workplace bullying over time, the mechanisms of moral disengagement as applied to workplace bullying and how the bullying might be alleviated in the organization when allocated to various parties.
