Abstract
Nature Conservation is an important topic within the Tropical Forestry Handbook, as it creates a thematic link with the chapters on natural resource management (Silviculture, Agroforestry, Plantation Forestry), the managerial aspects of resource handling (Enterprise Management, Forestry Economics), and the chapters covering target group participation in tropical forestry resource management (Forest right of target groups, Extension, Working with indigenous people). The chapter gives an overview of the most important aspects of conservation and protection of tropical forest resources; these are general requirements to select and manage biodiversity-rich forest resources. Furthermore concepts and terms are clarified for the day-to-day work of conservation managers.
