Abstract

Anne Denton (née Willison) is the original owner and apparent first compiler of Folger Shakespeare Library MS E.a.1, a prose miscellany of about fifty leaves incorporating material from the second half of the sixteenth century. Denton’s dates of birth and death are noted on the first folio as November 1, 1548, and October 29, 1566. Prayers and other materials included throughout indicate a persistent Catholic orientation among the Dentons of Hillesden, Buckinghamshire, who would be Royalists during the Civil War.
