A model of the structure of Fe – Fe3 C melts in the temperature range 1300 – 1700°C is developed on the basis of recent experimental data. In accordance with the model, the solubility of carbon in liquid iron is limited (about 2%). Stable dispersed particles of the second phase (cementite) form in the melt at a higher carbon content.
