Abstract
A historical perspective of design-dependent constraints and singular topologies is presented and their theoretical background as well as fundamental features discussed, together with methods for treating computational difficulties. This note contains some rather surprising new facts about singular topologies and it is hoped that it will provide both a comprehensive review and additional insights.
