Abstract
We study the low energy spectrum of a type II superconductor in the mixed state, with a low density of vortex lines (H≪H c2). The states which are localized in the core of a line cannot be described in the frame work of the local approximation (Cyrot — Section I). These states correspond precisely to the lowest part of the energy spectrum. The energy gap for these excitations of order\(\frac{{\Lambda _\infty ^2 }}{{2E_F }}\) (Δ ∞ is the gap in zero magnetic field,E F the Fermi energy) is considerably smaller than the gap in zero field. The corresponding density of states is of order\(N(0)\frac{B}{{H_{c2} }}\) (B being the macroscopic induction in the material).
These states determine the low temperature (T≪T c) properties of the superconductor. In that range of temperature:
1. the ultrasonic attenuation is anisotropic but extremely small.
2. there are two regimes for the relaxation of nuclear spins, depending on whether the diffusion of the nuclear magnetization is slow or fast with respect to the direct relaxation. In both regimes the relaxation is much faster than in a superconductor in zero field.
