Summary
The annual fluctuation of the water temperature is the predominant periodic signal in long observation series from the North Sea. On the basis of harmonic analysis of the familiar 50-year monthly mean values for various depth horizons and of 10-year weekly SST charts of the North Sea the differences in the annual fluctuation between the surface layer and the bottom layer are discussed. It is shown that an explanation for the noticeable amplitude distribution cannot be found in the frequently used, inexact expression “increasing continentality”. For this purpose, the turbulent heat flux components determined by applying bulk formulae are used, as well as the long-wave and short-wave radiation budget determined with the help of a radiation model.
As a significant result for the mass and salinity balance of the North Sea, a first estimate of the atmospheric water exchange leads to the statement that in the winter period the water exchange in the western North Sea is negative. From this results an increase in surface salinity, which leads to an increase in convection at this time of the year. Moreover, the increase in salinity gives the impression of a more intensive advection of Atlantic water into the North Sea. The positive balance of the water exchange in the summer months supports the development of vertical density gradients and stabilizes these gradients, as well as inhibiting the turbulent vertical exchange.
With the help of a simple local thermocline model it is shown that the local net heat exchange balances the annual fluctuation of the temperature of the water column and its stratification in the greater part of the North Sea. Exceptions are the areas with advective heat transport.
From the estimate of the annual fluctuation of the heat content of the North Sea and the balance of the net heat flux at the air — sea interface results the qualitative statement that the North Sea releases energy into the atmosphere on an annual average. It is shown by means of new figures for the advection of the North Sea that advective heat transports in the deep waters of the Norwegian Deep, from the English Channel and from the North Atlantic compensate for the heat deficit of the North Sea.
