Abstract
A string fixed at both ends oscillates in a plane in which there is a fixed straight line segment, parallel to the line joining the ends of the string. The string can rebound from the solid segment. The string is initially at rest, with prescribed shape. We prove that depending on the prescribed intial form of the string the motion is either periodic or aperiodic, and in the former case we compute the period.
