Summary
The following paper discusses some aspects of the isotropic and anisotropic yield conditions in the theory of plasticity. A short remark on the tensoriality of the material constants is followed by a theorem on the convexity of the isotropic yield surface. The isotropic yield criteria of v. Mises and Tresca are then extended to the case with different yield stresses in one-dimensional tension and compression (for the incompressible as well as for the compressible material). These extended isotropic yield criteria are thereupon specialized for plane stress. The general anisotropic yield surface and its relation to changes of the reference frame constitute a further subject of discussion with special emphasis on particular cases of anisotropy. A “reasonable” anisotropic generalization for the yield criterion of Tresca in plane stress is ultimately proposed.
