Abstract
Heavy metals dissolved in water can be determined quantitatively by way of X-ray fluorescence. In the case of concentrations from 0.001 ppm to 0.1 ppm, which are usually encountered in surface waters, enrichment is necessary since direct precipitation, or precipitation with subsequent extraction, does not proceed quantitatively and requires the consumption of considerable quantities of precipitants and solvents. The authors therefore describe a method for enrichment and preparation of a suitable matrix. Using a number of samples taken from receiving waters polluted by waste, the chemical behaviour of some heavy metals during storage in plastic containers is discussed.
