Summary
1. In dogs and cats, the dorsal roots of the lumbosacral spinal cord were cut bilaterally to interrupt thermosensitive afferents. After 3 weeks, experiments were undertaken in light anesthesia and at an ambient air temperature of 30°C. Local cooling in the lumbar vertebral canal and simultaneous local warming in the thoracic part of the vertebral canal was performed without lowering the general body temperature.
2. Local cooling in the lumbar vertebral canal elicited shivering of the hind limbs, although the dorsal roots of the lumbosacral spinal cord were cut. Since all possible thermosensitive afferents conducted from the wall of the vertebral canal and the meninges to the spinal cord were interrupted, shivering in these experiments can only have been elicited by direct cooling of the structures in the spinal cord.
3. Shivering induced by local cooling of the deafferented lumbosacral spinal cord was restricted to the hindlimbs. This means that, under the conditions of the experiments, the proprioceptive afferents of intact parts of the spinal cord cannot have participated in causing the tremor. The pattern of shivering was marked by irregular movements with greatly varying amplitudes.
Zusammenfassung
