Abstract
Dispersion relations for the resistive tearing instability are analytically found in the hydromagnetic approximation for a current sheet with a small normal component of the magnetic field. A strong stabilizing influence of the normal component on the development of the tearing instability is shown to exist. These results are also obtained from physical considerations, and so a simple interpretation of the stabilization effect of the normal component is given. The results of the present paper are compared with those of previous works on the topic, and the previous negative results are explained.
