Abstract
The importance of the tropical perennial oil crop coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) for the economy of developing countries (DC) has been discussed in detail (Persley, 1992). In the Philippines, every third person is involved in coconut production or processing, and the export of coconut oil is a notable factor to the Philippine economy. But also for other countries coconut has an outstanding, though predominantly local role to play. In Tanzania for example, the crop contributes to about 40% of the vegetable oil supply in the country. It is grown mainly by smallholders (about 300, 000 – 400, 000 farmers who account for approximately 95% of the total production) on an estimated area of some 252, 000 ha along the coastal belt of Tanzania and on the offshore islands of Zanzibar and Mafia.
