Abstract

Nitrogen availability is one of the most important factors for plant performance in agricultural systems. Any compound that alters the number or activity of microorganisms could affect the soil biochemical processes mainly the nitrogen cycle and ultimately the plant growth.

A soil incubation experiment was carried out to study the influence of soil herbicides on the nitrification activity and mineralization-immobilization processes in the soil. In this experiment we have investigated the changes of soluble and easily hydrolizable N content in the soil. The conditions were to be optimised for the aerobe nitrification. Four N levels were used in the experiment adding 0-50-100-200 mg urea-N kg−1 soil. The soil used in this experiment was a Ramann’s brown forest soil. Nitrogen forms were determined after 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks of incubation.

It was established that the three herbicides used in the experiment (atrazine, EPTC, alachlor) had affected the soil microorganisms. EPTC and atrazine inhibited the nitrification.
