Abstract
By means of infusion of Ringer lactate in the subarachnoidal spaces, different CSF intracranial dynamic parameters have been studied in 20 subjects. During the infusion, optic nerve diameters were evaluated with Standardized A-Scan. Anterior, posterior and intermediate transverse optic nerve diameters were obtained during the infusion test. The correlation between intracranial CSF dynamic parameters and optic nerve diameters showed: (a) a direct, biphasic, positive relation between diastolic intracranial pressure and optic nerve diameters, (b) a direct relation with the intracranial absorptive reserve, (c) rapid changes of optic nerve diameters in response to variation of intracranial pressure, (d) based on normal intracranial pressure values, we could define an echographic biometric range of normal optic nerve diameters, (e) the echographic investigation of increased intracranial pressure showed a high level of sensitivity and specificity of the Standardized A-Scan for detection of increased CSF pressure.
