Abstract
Microbial polysaccharides represent a plentiful, but so far only scarcely exploited reservoir of unique, multifunctional biopolymers. Advanced Methodologies for their structural characterization include SEC/LLS, FABMS, HPLC/pulse amperometry and combined physical-/chemo-enzymatic techniques. Some recent developments and prospective aspects related to the industrial use of microbial polysaccharides in various technical and biological disciplines are discussed. Tailored products obtained by strain selection and genetic engineering provide new opportunities for versatile commercial applications.
