Therapeutic Role of Intracavitary Bleomycin Administration in Cystic Craniopharyngioma

  • Chapter
Craniopharyngioma

Abstract

Craniopharyngioma is a histologically benign tumor which can be totally cured by radical surgical removal; however, such a result can only be achieved in a limited percentage of patients. The presence of delicate, highly functional structures surrounding the area where the tumor is commonly located makes total removal very difficult when the tumor is adherent to these structures. Children are particularly exposed to the effect of damage to the hypothalamus and because of this a conservative surgical attitude is frequently adopted that often results in tumor regrowth.
