Design codes, in the form of regulations, specifications, ordinances, standards and the like, are an important factor in the quality and cost of artifacts since they control their design and manufacture. Descriptions of the characteristics of codes, etc may be found in Fenves et al. (1976) and Fenves and Wright (1977).
