Strain response envelope: a complementary tool for evaluating hypoplastic constitutive equations

  • Chapter
Constitutive Modelling of Granular Materials

Abstract

The response envelope is a convenient tool to test the validity of any constitutive equation when restricted to an axisymmetric case such as the triax- ial plane. Due to the lack of experimental data, this technique is used numerically mostly to check and classify constitutive models. This paper proposes a critical review of different representations involved in the development of hypoplastic constitutive equations. The evaluation is based on three observed strain response envelopes of Hostun dense coarse sand, with respect to three requirements: the C 1-continuity of strain response envelope, the correct description of experimental data, and uniqueness. The material constants of hypoplastic equations are globally determined and can be locally optimized when compared to experiments. The strain response envelope technique can be used as a complimentary tool to develop and evaluate any constitutive equation.
