Die Geschichte der kognitiven Verhaltenstherapie (KVT) ist besonders eng mit der Psychologie des Lernens verknüpft. Experimentelle Befunde zur klassischen und operanten Konditionierung sind eine wichtige Grundlage von gängigen Modellen zur Entstehung psychischer Störungen sowie von Interventionsmethoden. Zusätzlich finden die Prinzipien des Modelllernens und die Wissensvermittlung Berücksichtigung. Aus heutiger Sicht lassen sich alle Formen des Lernens unter dem Begriff der Informationsverarbeitung zusammenfassen. Lernen findet dann statt, wenn das Individuum bedeutsame Informationen über das Auftreten von externen oder internen Bedingungen oder deren Valenz erhält, die sein zukünftiges Befinden, Denken, Verhalten und/oder seine physiologischen Reaktionen beeinflussen.
