Zusammenfassung
Die Theorie rationaler Bildungsentscheidungen nimmt derzeit in der Bildungsforschung einen sehr prominenten Platz ein. Der vorliegende Beitrag geht daher der Frage nach der theoretischen und empirischen Angemessenheit unterschiedlicher Varianten dieser Theorie zur Erklärung von Bildungsentscheidungen und Disparitäten in den Bildungschancen nach der sozialen Herkunft nach. Es werden die Humankapitaltheorie, die Theorie des geplanten Verhaltens und die soziologische Rational-Choice Theorie unterschieden. Diese Ansätze gehen übereinstimmend davon aus, dass Ungleichheit im Bildungserwerb das Resultat instrumentell rationaler Entscheidungen unter der Bedingung beschränkender Randbedingungen ist. Abgesehen von diesem Konsens unterscheiden sich die Theorievarianten in der theoretischen Bestimmtheit der als relevant angesehen Erklärungsfaktoren und dem angenommenen Rationalitätsgrad der Akteure. Die soziologische Rational-Choice Theorie kann derzeit empirisch als am besten überprüft angesehen werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Theorie wichtige Aspekte von Bildungsentscheidungen erfasst und einen relevanten Teil der Herkunftseffekte zu erklären vermag. Die empirische Evidenz erbringt aber auch Hinweise darauf, dass die Theorie nicht zu einer vollständigen Erklärung von Disparitäten im Bildungserwerb in der Lage ist.
