Der Neo-Institutionalismus hat in der Hochschulforschung in den letzten Jahren zunehmend Beachtung gefunden. Das belegen die zahlreichen empirischen und konzeptionellen Untersuchungen, die neo-institutionalistische Kernarbeiten wie den 1977 erschienenen Artikel „ Institutionalized Organizations – Formal Structure as Myth and Ceremony“ von John Meyer und Brian Rowan oder den Artikel von 1983 zur institutionellen Isomorphie von Paul DiMaggio und Walter Powell zitiert haben. So wurde z. B. der Beitrag von Meyer und Rowan (1977) im Zitationsindex 2239 mal zitiert, davon 201 mal in der Kategorie „Education and Educational Research“ und immerhin noch 52 mal von Beiträgen, die sich explizit mit Fragen der Hochschulforschung beschäftigen. DiMaggio und Powells Beitrag wurde von 2785 Beiträgen zitiert, davon 124 mal in erziehungswissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften und 53 mal in der Hochschulforschung.
