Für das physische Überleben der Menschen müssen in allen Gesellschaften Güter erstellt und Leistungen erbracht werden. Sobald die Herstellung von Gütern arbeitsteilig erfolgt, bedarf es Mechanismen der Verteilung der Güter zwischen den Gesellschaftsmitgliedern. Die zu beantwortende Frage lautet: Wer hat unter welchen Voraussetzungen Zugang zu welchem Anteil am erwirtschafteten Reichtum? Basierend auf einer Unterscheidung von (1957) lassen sich vornehmlich drei gesellschaftliche Mechanismen der Verteilung von Gütern differenzieren, die nebeneinander bestehen können, in unterschiedlichen Gesellschaftsformationen aber verschieden stark ausgeprägt sind: Die Verteilung von Gütern durch eine zentrale Instanz unter Gesichtspunkten der Bedürftigkeit (Redistribution), die mit der Verpflichtung zu einer späteren Erwiderung verbundene Gabe (Reziprozität) und der auf wechselseitigen Nutzenvorteilen beruhende Tausch von Gütern (Markt). Während in archaischen und traditionalen, aber auch in sozialistischen Wirtschaftsordnungen Reziprozität bzw. Redistribution die dominierenden Mechanismen der Güterverteilung sind, kennzeichnet moderne kapitalistische Ökonomien die Dominanz des Markttauschs. In kapitalistischen Marktwirtschaften sind Märkte dabei nicht nur für die Güterverteilung bedeutsam, sondern auch für deren Produktion. Im Unterschied zu einer Kommandowirtschaft ist es im Kapitalismus idealtypisch der Markt, der bestimmt, welche Güter produziert und wie sie hergestellt werden.
