Zusammenfassung
Der Begriff der ›Gewohnheit‹ (habit) nimmt im Pragmatismus eine zentrale Funktion ein: Er verbindet subjektive geistige Zustände – also Vorstellungen, Überzeugungen, Erwartungen wie auch Gefühle und Neigungen – mit körperlichen Handlungen. Diese Zustände sind nicht ›im Inneren‹ eines kartesischen Subjekts (oder Gehirns) zu verorten, sondern gelten als untrennbar verbunden mit Handlungsgewohnheiten und den durch sie bewirkten Antwortdispositionen. Der Begriff zielt somit auf eine Überwindung der traditionellen kartesischen Trennung von Körper und Geist, weshalb er auch als Grundelement einer pragmatistischen Reformulierung der Vernunft als Praxis dient. Mit ihm wird die Auffassung zurückgewiesen, Denken und Urteilen könnten von körperlichen Vollzügen, und damit von der Praxis, gelöst werden. Er verankert den Geist in der Praxis (s. Kap. 6).
