Abstract
A sensory function of the lateral line organ was first postulated by Jacobson (1813) on the basis of its extensive innervation, and he suggested that the organ was sensitive to mechanical stimulation. Knox (1825) corroborated this idea, and proposed that the adequate stimulus was movements of the surrounding water. He stated that “ … we should consider these organs as organs of touch, so modified, however, as to hold an intermediate place between the sensation of touch and hearing.”
