The Evolution of Insect Life Cycles

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

In temperate zones, organisms have evolved various adaptations for the timing of their developmental periods and dormancies to overcome annually changing weather conditions. For example, latitudinal gradients in the photoperiodic induction of a facultative diapause have been described in geographical populations of many insects from different latitudes (for reviews: see Beck 1980; Danilevskii 1965; Müller 1976; Saunders 1979; Tauber and Tauber 1976; Taylor and Spalding, this volume). Further attention has been focused on the occurrence of an obligatory diapause (Masaki 1961, 1978; Thiele 1977), a repetitive diapause (Matthes 1953; Pener and Orshan 1983; Tanaka 1983), and prolonged maintenance of diapause correlated to local climatic conditions (Halperin 1969; Philogene and Benjamin 1971; Waldbauer and Sternburg 1973). Although all these variations in seasonal control of insect life cycles have been mainly recognized between geographical populations, relatively few investigations have been carried out on the intrapopulational variation of diapause characters and its ecological significance (Bradshaw 1973; Lumme 1978; Sauer 1980, 1984).
