Abstract
The practice of human pancreas transplantation presumes that the microvascular complications seen in Type I diabetes mellitus are caused by disordered carbohydrate metabolism, and that perfect metabolic control can stop the progression of these microvascular changes.1 To date systems of delivering exogenous insulin have not proven effective in controlling carbohydrate metabolism or in preventing microvascular disease. Although the insulin pump can deliver insulin at a constant rate, without a glucose sensor the rate of infusion cannot change in response to ever-fluctuating rates of glucose use.
