Non-Oxide Ceramic Composites: Refractory and Ultra-High-Temperature Ceramics

The development of advanced engineering and technology in the aerospace field imposes increasingly stringent requirements on promising materials in terms of mechanical characteristics and functional properties. This leads to significant progress, in particular, in methods for creating ceramic and ceramic matrix materials. This collection aims to accumulate and summarize information on the progress in, above all, oxygen-free ceramics for both structural and functional purposes. The main objects of research are refractory carbides, borides, and metal nitrides, including MAX-phases and MXenes, high-entropy ceramics: new methods for their synthesis are discussed, revealing how composition, dispersity, and mutual distribution in the bulk of ceramic materials influence their target properties.

Materials are selected on the basis of articles submitted to Russian Journal of Inorganic Chemistry.

Elizaveta P. Simonenko is a chief scientific researcher at the Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, RAS. Her primary research focuses on developing methods for obtaining ultra-high-temperature ceramic and ceramic matrix materials used in oxygen-containing gas environments at temperatures >2000°C. This includes research on improving the oxidation resistance on ZrB2(HfB2)-SiC-based ceramics by introducing nanosized dopants with various chemical natures, as well as on synthesizing of ultrarefractory carbides. Elizaveta P. Simonenko has been the Executive Secretary of Russian Journal of Inorganic Chemistry since 2012.
