Adverse Radiation Effects in Neuro-Oncology

Radiation therapy and radiosurgery are key treatment strategies used for patients with primary and secondary neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS). Although its use is integral to the treatment paradigms in those with benign and malignant disease, recent advances have further elucidated key details to help further tailor and personalize ionizing radiation approaches. To this end, this special issue will review key topics in patients treated with brain and spine stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated radiotherapy, with a focus on recent evidence, including the diagnosis and management of radiation necrosis, evaluation of post-treatment imaging including white matter changes and pseudoprogression, review of the impact of radiation dosimetry on neurocognition, and analysis of advanced imaging features in radiation injury. Moreover, unique topics will also be discussed including the effects of particle therapy on the brain, radiosurgery in eloquent areas, and pediatrics effects of radiotherapy. Together, this collection is a comprehensive, evidenced-based, and modern review of the published literature regarding the effects of radiotherapy on the brain and spinal cord.
