Abstract
Underground coal mine is specified by tough working condition and hazardous environment. Sudden rises in toxic and flammable gases along with rise in temperature and humidity can cause several fatal and non-fatal accidents. So it is very important to regularly monitor the levels of environmental parameters to keep the atmosphere just right in underground coal mine. This paper presents design and development of a smart coal mine monitoring Rover using LabVIEW and wireless sensor network (WSN). This microcontroller-based Rover is made up of an array of sensors which senses the environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, and toxic gases like carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4) gas levels in underground coal mines. All sensed data are digitized by internal ADCs of Arduino Pro Mini microcontroller and sent to an outer station for monitoring. A bluetooth module HC-05 is used for communication between the rover and the outer station. Here, LabVIEW works as monitoring system using graphical user interface (GUI) platform which makes the project more versatile and user friendly. The system provides real-time monitoring of the coal mine environmental condition and helps the operator to take necessary action accordingly to avoid any type of hazard.
