Morphological and Biochemical Characteristics of the Laryngeal Nerve Paraganglia

Chemoreceptors in Respiratory Control

Abstract

Non-chromaffin paraganglia are widely distributed in the body especially, in the head and neck region and the thorax, but are also found in the abdomen. By far the most studied of these organs is the carotid body, located in the bifurcation of the common carotid artery. In the main vagal trunk paraganglia were discovered 1909 (Aschoff and Goodhart), and in 1946 Hollinshead reported chemoreceptor activity from rat abdominal vagal paraganglia which primarily influenced the cardio-vascular system. Glomic tissue in association with the recurrent- and superior laryngeal nerve of man (RLN and SLN respectively), was reported by Watzka (1963) and Kleinsasser (1964). These paraganglia are found in the laryngeal mucosa in close vicinity to small branches of the RLN and SLN. Recently, McDonald and Blewett (1981) and Carlsoo et al. (1982) localized carotid body-like organs (paraganglia) in the main trunk of the RLN and SLN of the rat. In the present report the above mentioned laryngeal nerve paraganglia have been studied ultrastructurally as well as biochemically after various experimental procedures and the findings correlated to previous results of the carotid body. Moreover, human RLN specimens have been sectioned and investigated for glomic tissue.
