Abstract
In this paper, the thermodynamics and kinetics of corrosion processes are analyzed. The phenomena governing the attack on ceramics by liquid metals are described, together with the degradation mechanisms on the surface of a ceramic subject to corrosion by a liquid metal. Theories governing wetting phenomena (contact angle, work of adhesion, capillary penetration) are defined, as well as the factors affecting the wetting process. Corrosion testing apparatus and methods suitable for quality control and for research and development applications are described and discussed.
The paper includes an annotated bibliography on corrosion of ceramics by liquid metals, where the resistance of a wide class of ceramics to such corrosion is also assessed.
