Abstract
The apple is cultivated in temperate regions all over the world. The commercially produced scion cultivars belong to the species Malus × domestica Borkh. and most of the rootstocks to Malus pumila Mill. (Way et al., 1990). Established apple cultivars as well as apple rootstocks are highly heterozygous. Most scions are difficult to root from shoot cuttings. In order to get new plants and to preserve the intact genome of a desired cultivar, scions are propagated by budding or grafting onto seedlings or vegetatively propagated rootstocks.
