Abstract
In the past two decades, a great deal of effort has gone into attempts to map the spiral structure of the Galaxy by optical means. This labour has been rewarded with some success, particularly in the southern Milky Way (e.g. Jackson 1976) and in the anticentre direction (Moffat, FitzGerald, and Jackson 1979), yet there remain some regions of the Galaxy where our knowledge of the distribution of optical spiral tracers is far from complete. Perhaps the best example of this is the region between 1 = 30°and 70°, as can be appreciated from any of a number of recent maps of optical tracers (Walborn 1973; Vogt and Moffat 1975; Crampton and Georgelin 1975; Humphreys 1979), all of which show a distinct lack of objects within this longitude range.
