Radio Recombination Lines

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 80))

Abstract

Large scale surveys of recombination line emission from the galaxy are made in order to:

  1. (1)

delineate the distribution of ionized gas in our galaxy,

  2. (2)

to study the properties of recombination line emission in ionized gas far from the sun,

  3. (3)

study the physical conditions in distant HII regions,

  4. (4)

enlarge the sample of distant HII regions, and

  5. (5)

catalog newly detected, flat spectrum non-thermal sources which are recognized by the absence of recombination line emission.
