  • Chapter
Indicators Relevant to Farm Animal Welfare

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science ((CTVM,volume 23))

Abstract

The authors expose the reasons for their interest in a psycho-ethological study of domestic animals in function of a comparative analysis of several species and of the use of experimental test data correlated to physiological and performance parameters, for a deeper and thorough biological knowledge of the subjects for the appraisal of their adaptive capabilities, in different environments. Examples of behavioural tests are described and the results are synthetically reported on:‘openfield’ test on piglets and laying hens; learning tests in heifers, laying hens and dogs; Imprinting tests in turkey and pheasant poults in intensive husbandry.
